In the Press Freedom Index 2023, India ranks 161 out of 180 nations. The violence against journalists, the politically partisan media, and the concentration of media ownership all show that press freedom is under attack in "the world's largest democracy."
The one-day ban on NDTV India is a direct attack on free press. It is an attempt to silence dissent and violets the rights to question, discuss and debate the actions and the policies of the authorities, which is one of the basic rights in any democracy. Since long, government has been trying to suppress voices in the name of nationalism making people used to with the idea of living under an undeclared emergency.

Pahalaj Nihalani had recently suggested more than 30 cuts and the name change for 'Udta Panjab', which is scheduled to be released on Jun 17 after the interference of Mumbai High Court.
Massive protest has been planned at Maoist hotbed Bastar to be led by thousands of local, regional, state and national journalists on December 21, demanding a law to protect scribes, who are stuck between Maoists and police at conflict zone in Chhattisgarh. The protests come in wake of arrests of two regional journalists in Bastar on charges of supporting Maoists. Regional journalist Santosh Yadav, 29, who worked as freelancer for newspapers was arrested on September 29 and another news agent Somaru Nag on July 16.
Aseem Trivedi is a political cartoonist and activist from India. In 2012, his website was blocked and he was arrested for his cartoon-based campaign, 'Cartoons Against Corruption.'
