Erdogan using weaponized judiciary to block his rivals

Erdogan has been using the #WeaponizedJudiciary to block Turkey’s political opposition in the run up to 2023 elections. The conviction of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu and the ban on him from holding elected political office is another example of these attacks on the opposition.

The ruling against Imamoglu appears to be a pattern of similar events befalling political rivals of Erdogan ahead of the 2023 elections. In May, Turkey’s Court of Cassation upheld the conviction of Canan Kaftancıoğlu, the Istanbul Republian People’s Party chair.

Selahattin Demirtaş, the former co-chair of turkey's second-largest opposition party, has been detained since 2016. He has been convicted under Article 314, an anti-terror provision, Turkish Government has increasingly been misusing to prosecute the critics of its policies.

ECtHR has ordered the release of Demirtas but government claimed that his detention is based on anonymous testimony. HRW's research shows that prosecutors bringing terrorism cases increasingly seek to rely on anonymous testimonies making untestable assertions about suspects.

These cartoons are based on a report released by 'Advocates of Silenced Turkey'

30 women were detained and strip-searched at Uşak Police Department. They were forced to undress completely and squat. Many incidents of strip searches are being reported in Turkish prisons.

A victim told the court, "They took off my pants. In front of a chair, they bent my head forward. A cop tried to stick his genitals into my anus while another police officer was filming it.

Rapes and threats of rape are being used as a tool for forced confession in Turkish Prisons and detention centres.

Public Prosecutor, who was investigating the suspicious death in solitary confinement, closed the case and launched an investigation against those who published the photographs in the press.

Of the 562 victims, 283 were subjected to torture in detention centres and 73 in police stations. 134 persons were subjected to torture while in detention and transport vehicles.

A torturer policewoman Elif Uzun Sümercan was later appointed as the Head of the Department. It shows how the AKP government protects and rewards torturers.

The AKP government publicizes the acts of torture in the press with pictures and video footage, portraying blatant torture as a success in the fight against crime.

These cartoons are to support the arrested lawyers of Turkey, who are targeted just for doing their job honestly. An attack on lawyers is also an attack on the people's right to fair trial and justice. No judicial system can work freely without independent and fearless lawyers.

On the 'Day of the Endangered Lawyers' (24th January), let's raise our voices for the freedom of these arrested lawyers of Turkey.

668 babies are languishing with their mothers in Turkey’s prisons. Along with these babies, the victims of the ongoing brutal persecution in Turkey include cancer patients, pregnant women, new mothers, men in their 80s and so forth. We will be failing in our duty as fellow human beings if we do not raise our voice against this utterly inhumane and unlawful practice of the Turkish government. The inalienable right of these babies to live a free and dignified life with their parents must be honoured. Free them now!

Victims of forced disappearance in Turkey

On this ‘International day of the victims of enforced disappearances’ (August 30), let’s raise our voices for the missing people of Turkey. In the aftermath of the coup attempt last year, at least thirteen people have been abducted allegedly by elements linked to the Turkish government as part of an intimidation campaign targeting critics and opponents of Turkey’s president.
